Language Learning Through Interactive Film
In traditional language learning videos, the learner remains a spectator who passively watches a conversation unfold. In an interactive film, the learner becomes a participant who actively shapes the dialogue and engages with the language in real time.
In this project, I wrote, directed, and produced an interactive film designed specifically for Turkish language learning. The video below is a demo version, so the interface uses English buttons, and English subtitles can be enabled by clicking CC on the player.
Three ways interactive media transforms teaching
Active Engagement
Learners stop watching and start doing. Choices, clicks, and decisions keep attention on the content instead of drifting away.
Instant Feedback
In-video questions check understanding the moment an idea is introduced, so misconceptions are caught early.
Learning by Choice
Branching scenarios let learners explore consequences safely. Mistakes become part of the story, and rewinding to try again builds confidence.
Interactive Quizzes in Teaching
Lecture videos have a well‑known weakness: they are easy to watch and easy to forget. Embedding questions inside the video itself changes the viewing contract. The video pauses and asks a question about what was just explained, and it only continues once the learner has committed to an answer.
For my classes, I designed and produced integrated video quizzes that transform passive viewing into active engagement. These embedded prompts reinforce key concepts, slow down the pace at critical moments, and help learners retain material more effectively by requiring them to think, respond, and reflect in real time.
